I almost exclusively drink European style Lagers, but I was recently tempted by an ambitious server into ordering a Conquistador Doppelbock from the Karl Strauss brewery in Costa Mesa. The beer was a bit darker that an Irish red ale, but not overly fruity. The most distinct flavors are Caramel, Coffee and plum. It was very easy to drink and the 8.2 alcohol content had me seriously buzzed after my second pint. Karl Strauss also brews an amber lager which also has strong hints of caramel. If you don't plan on getting tanked, the Amber Lager might be a better choice. The Conquistador Doppelbock is seasonal and I would definitely recommend tracking it down at a bar near you in Orange County.
